| Description: |
This month we feature a great software package that gives you the opportunity of constructing your own little universe and exploring its development.
This is no joke, you get to position your own stars, planets, moons and asteroids anywhere you would like to, give them initial velocities and then begin their motions. Just by playing around with this software you can develop physical intuition about concepts such as Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation, Conservation of Momentum, and others.
Newton's Aquarium is an accurate (4th order Runge-Kutta error correction is included) 3D n-body simulation. It can display forces, velocities and accelerations of all present bodies in real time. All trajectories are also traced in real time. Basic 3D support, i.e. viewing the xy-, xz- and yz- planes is available.
The user interface is nice and functional. Button and tool bars provide fast and easy access to almost all software features available to the user. Balloon help pops up when you place your mouse pointer on any of the buttons. A very useful HTML user's guide is included with the software.
Screen shot example of the Newton's Aquarium:
In our opinion, Newton's Aquarium is one of the most useful solar simulation software packages available on the market. Its high educational value and its reasonable price make it a 'must have' for each and every student.
