| Description: |
Pro Fit 5.1 is a comprehensive scientific software package that offers data display, function generation, curve fitting, and professional graphics
capabilities. The user interface is so intuitive that even the inexperienced user hardly ever needs to consult either the on-line help or the handbook.
The key features are:
- Spreadsheets with up to 16 million rows and columns. Comprehensive data transformation routines (FFT, sorting, smoothing, reducing, or user defined).
- Numerous in-built functions and a Pascal-like programming environment to generate user-defined functions. Functions can be programmed immediately
with minimal learning time thanks to the slick interface and the numerous on-line code examples. In addition, external compilers, such as Think-Pascal, Think-C, and Metroworks can be used to build plug-in modules.
- Data and functions can be drawn and plotted with total control of the display format. This includes multiple graphs, multiple axes, fonts, colours, graphs and line styles. Bar and pie charts, contour plots and 3D displays are also possible.
- An especially beautiful feature is the nonlinear curve fitting capability. The parameters of a function are displayed in a window where they can be activated, changed, and limited. Four different fitting algorithms are available to find the least-squares fit to a data set. This reviewer was delighted with the preview window in which curves can be dragged manually to give a rough fit to the data. While dragging, the activated parameter changes in real-time.
-Data import into spreadsheets is done from text files or by filtering most common data formats. Filters can also be defined manually using intuitive dialog boxes. External modules can be written to acquire data over computer interfaces such as IEEE/GPIB cards. It is even possible to use pro Fit to control whole experiments.
-The graphics capabilities also allow the user to draw diagrams such as experimental setups. When it comes to printing or exporting all those beautiful graphs, diagramms and explanatory notes, pro Fit offers full support for embedded Postscript, Quickdraw GX, bitmaps, and high resolution pict.
In the opinion of this reviewer, the comprehensive features of pro Fit rival or surpass those of its competitors. The intuitive interface means students do not waste time leafing though brick shaped handbooks.
