An abacus is a calculation tool, constructed here as a wooden frame with beads sliding on posts. It was in use centuries before the adoption of the written Arabic numeral system and is still widely used by merchants and clerks in Russia, China and elsewhere.
Abacus is a flat, oblong calculating instrument with a number of counting beads that slide back and forth along rods. A crosswise bar divides Abacus into two parts: the upper part that contains 2 rows of the 5-value counting beads and the lower containg 5 rows of the 1-value counting beads.
By moving beads and using simple rules (further explained in the inclosed instructions booklet) one can add and subtract.
