The liquid crystal on the bottom of the Spectra Stone is formulated to change colors between the temperature of 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius) and 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius). Above and below these temperatures the Spectra Stone will turn dark. Thermal Liquid Crystal is made of cholesterol and therefore called cholesteric liquid crystal. Its molecules are rod shaped and change their positions as temperatures change causing them to reflect different colors. The liquid crystal used here has two formulations microencapsulated so it repeats several of the colors. Since the Spectra Stone is lens shaped, viewing it at different angles will also change the color that you see.
